Penang and bad ears

No, I haven’t read your e-mails. They’re still trickling through. At around 3,500, it’ll be a while…

Drove to Penang Wednesday evening. Nice (speedy) drive, and in-spite of the rain, there in under 3.5 hours. Internet access at the executive suite at Equatorial Hotel costs 58 bucks (and no, I’m not paying for it).

Wake up with my left ear feeling blocked. Drive around Penang, eat excellent seafood (Batu Mau?). Wake up again and decide its time to get my ear fixed. Visit the ENT, he extracts about 260 bucks or so from me, and takes my blood. Have excellent seafood porridge, visit the tallest statue in the world (120ft tall, the Goddess of Mercy), then head back to the ENT. This time he takes 520 bucks from me, gives me a couple of jabs, I’m under anastethic, and he’s blowing out stuff outta my ear.

Dinner again at another excellent (but secluded) seafood restaurant. Sleep. Wake up, eat breakfast, get my dressing cleaned, and that costs me 175 bucks. Wow, expensive holiday, just to get the wax cleaned out of my ears. Oh, he jabbed me again. Urgh.

  • Jon, thanks for that. I'll keep this in mind if it ever happens again (and I hope it doesn't).

Next time your ear blocks up, try lying down with offending ear uppermost and get some kind person to drop in a VERY small amount (3-4 drops) of pure olive oil. Stay lying there for as long as you can (e.g. overnight). This is the technique recommended by ENT specialists in the UK, and often does the trick.
