Time off for Labour Day
- After three hours of sleep, I saw a dead USB thumb drive. Microsoft Windows apparently wanted to reformat it, and running fdisk said there was no partition table. fsck reported that the logical sector was zerorized. Great, with no other backups, this was it – the be all and the end all. So the easy fix came with the help of some cool Unix utilities: dd,hexdump, awk, strings. Wow, data recovery with a disk image does really seem to become relatively simple then. All hail Unix. Good resource in The Programmer’s File Format Collection if you plan on hacking on Word files, for instance.
- Thinking of feeding off WordPress categories instead? It’s possible with the ?cat=cat# option embedded to the end of the feed source, where cat# = category number.
- The Hacker’s Diet is proving to be an interesting read, especially with the methodology around it.
- Lunch at McDonalds, dinner at a nice new Malaysian place serving char kway teow, then church, where we listened on about valleys and seasons in life, the up’s & down’s, then more food in the sense of gado gado at another new Indonesian joint.
- The Red Hat/Fedora SIG will be having its second meeting in Melbourne on the 6th of May, starting of with a talk by Richard Keech on “Managing your systems with the Red Hat Network Satellite”, at RH’s Melbourne premises. Dinner should be afterward, so join the list already, and come.
