Heidelberg

Tuesday, November 9th, 2004

I considered going to Heidelberg today (to drink beerCoke), but ended up in Port Melbourne and then caught The Notebook (gold class mind you!). Major up for the week, is I went to the securities comission and registered Arena Techniques Pty Ltd. I now, supposedly run a company. It makes up for the other lows that I got just a few hours ago over the phone.

Catching up on freedesktop.org admin work. We do, do work. Look, fedoraproject now has Harald’s FAQ. Soon, we’ll have to decide on the forum integration, with the Fedora Community Portal.

My crack idea: fedoraproject.org’s main page will be the community portal, and off it, we offer forums, wiki, people aggregator, news aggregator, wiki (for devels/users), faq, etc… Once central location. Gosh, we can finally get the knowledge bank thing going. Now to convince Seth, that he actually likes PHP and MySQL :)

Fedora Core 3 / Made Simple preview

Monday, November 8th, 2004

Fedora Core 3 is out. Go Heidelberg. Now, for a sample chapter from Fedora Core: Made Simple, go take a look at Installing Fedora. I’m told that the more screenshots the better for the user, so go buy your mom a copy of the Made Simple guide ;-)

Warning, its 2.3MB in size. Screen optimising just made it look bad, so its print optimised. Have fun, feedback via e-mail please at byte@aeon.com.my - no comments, thank the comment spammers for that.

We’ve come a long, long way baby

Saturday, November 6th, 2004

Its Saturday night. FC3 is almost out. I’m sitting at home, and chatting with two others on #fedora-ppc, realising that we’re all in Australia, and are all at home on a Saturday night doing Fedora installs. This is sad. I’m young, I should be out hitting the clubs or something. On the bright side, we have more happy PPC users (jamieson, wmealing), because the rawhide tree seems to work.

So here’s the beef. Install Fedora, according to the guide. Make sure in /etc/yaboot.conf, you not only have a location, but there’s initrd= and if you want, sysmap= for initrd/sysmap. Run ybin. Probably getting the unable to load inital console bug. Easy fix. Harald’s udev doc has a section for Udev without initrd. Boot into rescue mode, and follow instructions. Reboot, have a happy PPC life. selinux=0 will get rid of avc error messages. I’ll update the guide soon, its already sitting here in Emacs RCS, I just need to spiff it up a bit.

The girl meets Linux

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2004

The girl installed Fedora Core 3 (well, some release candidate of sorts) on a box here. Using the guide. All by herself. And it was successful. No breakages, she logged in, found her way around it, and might end up using it a lot more. She’s a thoroughbred Windows user… Questions like “what is GNOME?” or “what is a desktop environment?” came up, so maybe its time to explain that more liberally in the guide.

teh deaf

“Hi, it’s Tung”
“Hi, it’s Colin”
“Hi, it’s Tung”
“Hi, yes, I’m Colin. Who are you?”
“Hi, it’s Tung, I’m replying to your mail now”
“Oh, Tung!”
< rest of conversation goes on fine… >

/me goes off feeling rather silly. And possibly realising I’m a little deaf or something! Yay, semester is over. That also means a whole heap of work starts now…
