KL, the land of watered down beer

Fireangel doesn’t like her drinks watered down. Neither do I.

However, it seems to be common practice in Kuala Lumpur. Anywhere I go, it seems like beer is watered down. It doesn’t matter if its more “exotic” beers like Kilkenny or Hoegaarden; it also happens to the common local beers like Tiger. Its just a sad thing.

Take for example, the RM28 for a pint of Hoegaarden on tap (ok, its a few bucks more, but when you buy 18 beers, they seem to give you a discount). This at Deutsches Gasthaus 2, in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI). Its definitely watered down. The atmosphere is nice, the service is fabulous, the range of beers available are definitely impressive (lots of imported stuff, in bottles), but I don’t see myself returning by choice, if all I get is expensive, watered down beer.

The one place I found that serves good draught beer, is Decanter, located in Sri Hartamas. Its relatively cheap, non-watered down, but sadly they only serve Tiger beer (I’d prefer Carlsberg on tap, any day). Backyard in Sri Hartamas also seems to be true blue beer.

Where else in the Klang Valley does one get real beer?

I was at Deutsches Gasthaus had my Hoegaarden but I thought it was just me. It’s about RM32 per pint (if you don’t buy 18 beers).

    :(

Ah, so RM4 more per pint… for watered down beer.

Well, I was eager to get a bottle opened up for a comparison taste test… maybe the next time I’m back in a couple of weeks.

Have you found good Hoegaarden, justine?

byteeeee – when are you back down in melb again? the Belgium beer cafe at southbank is calling our name!!!

Sigh, don’t know anywhere that does good draught.

Finnegan’s surprisingly doesn’t serve Hoegaarden, so I settle for Kilkenny once in a while. Finn’s is not too bad (price-wise) for me. I get special office rates – Happy Hour 24/7 :D

we didn’t get a discount because we had 18 beers, we used my friend’s membership card remember.

@aussieaubs: I am in Melbourne… The Belgian is about 0.5hr walk from my place…

@ruben: Ah yes, membership card. The waiter did also mention that we could get one (but I thought what the heck, I’m probably never going there again… water in beer = bad). Hence reaching for your friends one

@justine: You work at Finnegans? Well, c’mon, invite us boozers to have happy hour Kilkenny’s :) I used to drink this at a club, but usually, they don’t have it on tap unless its on promotion (which is almost, never nowadays)

  8. byte says:

wahlau! Long time no chat. Coming to Germany to drink beer is not economical… Got to drink beer in the locale I’m in at the moment… Like today? Melbourne beer :)

this is Malaysia, everything is expensive. One thing we always do is buy back and drink, you can find it cheaper but have to chill it yourself and of course is not draught. Just enjoy and chill at home cheapest way to enjoy beer…haha

If you got any tips for beer in Malaysia do drop a comment for us in beerbeer!
