On relationships

Khairil (its weird not just typing kaeru) says:

there is a good Korean saying, “There is no friendship between a guy and a girl” :)

The Korean’s are a smart lot. Apparently, in the old days (~25-30 years ago?), people got marriage proposals after five dates (in Asia, at least). Yes, you read that right – five dates. Well, you were engaged to be married, anyways…

Fast forward to the 21st century. What do we see? The idea of platonic relationships, dates stretching on for years, casual partnerships, “it’s complicated”™ relationships, et al

When did life get so complicated? Why?

p/s: the word platonic is interesting too. the OED defines it as:

( platonic) (of love or friendship) intimate and affectionate but not sexual : their relationship is purely platonic.

I think that the word is culturally redundant in 90% of Asia. (OK, I pulled the 90% statistic out of my arse)

everything is so platonic these days because paranoia runs rampent. Every one is Me Me Me and everyone wants that unlocked marriage door to run out irresponsibly at the first sign of trouble. The world makes a mockery of the word Marriage. They live together out of sexual and financial need but not the commitment that comes with real love and hard work. People are too lazy and fast paced to put work into marriage. Everything is all about strictly relationships. Even the lack of commitment in relationships is spilling over to the lack of commitment in the work force. The average person stays on a job only 6 months. People these day say," if it takes a lot of work then I'm in the wrong relationship." Even the best of relationships take work and the cop out is just that a Cop Out!
