OSDC.my 2009 != foss.my

Just to set the record straight, OSDC.my 2009 has no relation to foss.my. They have a different theme, a highly swank location (i.e. not a place of higher education), it is not community run (there are community members in the committee though), and its sponsored by MDEC.

In fact, I’m not even sure what the event is called – it may differ between OSDC.my to MSC OSCON.my. Mad props to the folk behind the real OSDC (community run, in a different city within Australia) and O’Reilly’s OSCON, since their names are really popular :-)

Now, what about foss.my 2009? Its about time we started planning for the event. foss.my 2008 was most successful, held during November 8-9 2008, but a lot of students complained — they didn’t like the time, as they had exams before or after the event (heck, even one of the crew members, had an exam the next day!).

So, let me ask a few questions, and feel free to reply in comments:

  1. What timeframe would work best for foss.my 2009? In terms of a month, is September or October better? Keep in mind we don’t want other event clashes.
  2. Do you want foss.my 2009 to be longer? Two days, with two tracks, seemed to be a little short for people.
  3. If so, how many days do you want foss.my 2009 to be?
  4. Do you want it to run through the weekend (so maybe Saturday, Sunday, Monday)?

International folk should answer this too… because you’ll probably be coming to attend, to speak, to mingle, etc. Do you want to come at a time when Malaysia has a colourful event? Do you want to see parts of KL or other parts of Malaysia?

Disclosure: I don’t speak for anyone else on the past/current/future foss.my committee, just myself.

I would say September, if I’m not mistaken October would be close to exam period, not sure.

I would prefer it runs on the weekend, maybe like what you suggested, Sat-Mon.

Looking forward to my first FOSS.my :)

It’s good that this post clarifies the differences between the event. The MDEC event has some people from the community participating, but don’t expect an open community driven event like FOSS.my.

I also find it rather rude of the organizers, to put my name down for a talk complete with title, when I have not been invited nor confirmed participation in any way to this OSDC.my event.

As for FOSS.my 2009 December is probably best for Inigo folks, because that’s the slow time of the year in terms of work, and we’d like to be more involved in the organization. If it’s earlier, September is a better month.

Two days over weekend is best. Most FOSS folks in Malaysia have day jobs, which are usually not related to FOSS. I hope though that more companies start seeing the value of supporting their staff to attend on weekdays.

    Try to accomodate student?
Middle of the year is nice, for one reason, most is on holiday. June or july, but something school starts at august,

Really schedule might be so different between uni or colleges, i would say, pick one, any one. and put it on weekends.

Well, sept or oct would be fine. Nov would be a bit late, and i gues it’ll be time for other events then. I would definitely come if its sept or oct. Looking forward for the dates from you folks.

I think you can never satisfied anyone. Just choose the date that foss.my think they will get fully prepare, get enough buzz.

Weekdays is fine with me. I don’t think anyone got an exam during that day. If you want to longer the period. I think Friday is better than Monday , it’s easier for alot of people to apply for leave.
