What Wikipedia looks like when their database goes away

This wiki has a problem

An unknown error connecting to MySQL on 10.0.6.28? Oh dear me… It came back up within 2 minutes though from the time I got the screenshot.

it happens usually because of app/other layer fault, not database – database just sees thousands of idle connections, and eventually runs out of max_conns slots.

Can you share with us what kind of reporting tools you guys have to see what happens and when? Also, how you guys detect faults and get it fixed automatically? I think a lot of people would love to know more about how Wikipedia works, and the nitty gritty behind it :)

If Wikipedia exists for years and I had to read your post to see how it’s downtime looks like, I’s say it’s a pretty decent service. :)

  4. Heh, nice catch :)
