{"id":1062,"date":"2008-09-23T06:51:16","date_gmt":"2008-09-23T11:51:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/?p=1062"},"modified":"2008-09-23T06:51:16","modified_gmt":"2008-09-23T11:51:16","slug":"switcher-guides","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/archives\/2008\/09\/23\/switcher-guides","title":{"rendered":"Switcher Guides"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I had to futz with an Ubuntu server that was to run mail, web, and database services. <\/p>\n<p>You slowly learn that Ubuntu as a desktop is easy to use, but as a server, its &#8220;different&#8221;, if you come from a Red Hat based background (especially if you&#8217;ve been using Red Hat-based distributions for the last thirteen years or so). <\/p>\n<p>From example, while <tt>service httpd start<\/tt> works (well, the equivalent is <tt>service apache start<\/tt>), enabling things on boot using <tt>chkconfig<\/tt> (I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/archives\/2007\/08\/03\/embracing-chkconfig-to-auto-start-services-like-mysql-on-rhelcentosfedoraetc\">wrote about it<\/a> a while back) is replaced with <tt>update-rc.d<\/tt>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, if you&#8217;re an rpm aficionado, dpkg is a little different. I applaud the Ubuntu folk for creating an article such as <a href=\"https:\/\/help.ubuntu.com\/community\/SwitchingToUbuntu\/FromLinux\/%20RedHatEnterpriseLinuxAndFedora\">Switching to Ubuntu from Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Fedora<\/a>. Impressive.
