{"id":212,"date":"2004-09-13T22:11:55","date_gmt":"2004-09-14T03:11:55","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=212"},"modified":"2004-09-13T22:11:55","modified_gmt":"2004-09-14T03:11:55","slug":"oss-malaysia-piracy-crack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/archives\/2004\/09\/13\/oss-malaysia-piracy-crack","title":{"rendered":"OSS Malaysia piracy crack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/star-techcentral.com\/tech\/story.asp?file=\/2004\/9\/13\/technology\/8854952&#038;sec=technology\">Open source &#8216;pirates&#8217; to be prosecuted, says ministry<\/a> &#8211; only in Malaysia, will they be pirating open source, <i>eh?<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Noticed they picked up FreeBSD 5.0 (FreeBSD license allows <em>pirating<\/em> it), and RHEL3.0 (not so legal, because of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\/licenses\/rhel_rha_eula.html\">EULA<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\/about\/corporate\/trademark\/\">trademarks<\/a>). However, this does not stop the pirates at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lowyat.net\/\">Low Yat<\/a> selling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centos.org\/\">Centos<\/a> for instance (or even <a href=\"http:\/\/fedora.redhat.com\/\">Fedora Core<\/a>). Heck, they could customise RHEL and call it <em>Rat Hat Enterprise Linux<\/em>, and that&#8217;s probably &#8220;legal&#8221; too (<em>make sure all the logos and trademarks s\/Red\/Rat\/g though<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>So no, there&#8217;s no pirated OSS damnit. NSH is right in saying that the BSA might <a href=\"http:\/\/star-techcentral.com\/tech\/story.asp?file=\/2004\/8\/5\/technology\/8587556&#038;sec=technology\">say some silly things<\/a> (more likely add to the silly things). So in response to <a href=\"http:\/\/liewcf.com\/wp\/archives\/2004\/09\/re-pirated-open-source-software\/\">LcF<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/cstan7.frens.net\/archives\/2004\/09\/pirated_open_so_1.html\">CS<\/a>, these pirates probably didn&#8217;t do anything bad if they sold RHEL Sources (thats 100% legal, selling SRPMS &#8211; charging for the cost of the CDs or DVD), and yes, stop wasting public money and time, go pursue the BSA-related organisations (of which RH isn&#8217;t a part of, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bsa.org\/malaysia\/about\/BSA-Members.cfm\">neither<\/a> is Novell) instead.<\/p>\n<p>In other good news, the <a href=\"http:\/\/star-techcentral.com\/tech\/story.asp?file=\/2004\/9\/13\/technology\/8875979&#038;sec=technology\">Malaysian Communications &#038; Multimedia Commission (MCMC) backs the HITBSecConf2004<\/a>. They&#8217;re even presenting a paper. If you get a chance to go, the <a href=\"http:\/\/conference.hackinthebox.org\/\">HITBSecConf<\/a> is a really fun place to head to. Lastly, Red Hat are back with their <a href=\"http:\/\/apac.redhat.com\/worldtour\/\">World Tour<\/a>.
