{"id":263,"date":"2005-01-19T00:23:01","date_gmt":"2005-01-19T05:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"\/?p=263"},"modified":"2007-10-25T23:51:31","modified_gmt":"2007-10-26T04:51:31","slug":"disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/archives\/2005\/01\/19\/disaster","title":{"rendered":"Open Source Disaster Relief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We all knew that they were evil, but who thought Microsoft would refuse to give Windows licenses away, because the apps built on top of it were going to be open source based?<\/p>\n<p>This is exactly the way they behaved when they <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lug.lk\/lurker\/message\/20050112.024554.f4eeb87a.en.html\">refused to give XP licenses<\/a> for notebooks that were to be used for <strong>relief work<\/strong>. Instead, they thought it was more than appropriate to charge $135 per XP license. The Sri Lankan&#8217;s were trying to build a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lug.lk\/lurker\/message\/20050104.171341.d3bdfb36.en.html\">disaster management system<\/a>, open-source based, called <a href=\"http:\/\/relief.cno.gov.lk\/\">Sahana<\/a>. As described at the <a href=\"http:\/\/sahana.sourceforge.net\/\">Sahana sf.net<\/a> page, it handles all forms of crisis management, including refugee camp management (including match-making based on supply\/demand), lost persons database, and more. They are looking for PHP\/Mambo, Java, and MySQL blokes to help design the system and continue development.<\/p>\n<p>I even noticed a post about running <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/mailarchive\/forum.php?thread_id=6324928&amp;forum_id=43549\">Mambo on an iPaq<\/a> running <a href=\"http:\/\/opie.handhelds.org\/cgi-bin\/moin.cgi\/\">OPIE<\/a>. There&#8217;s a rather nice write-up about it at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxgazette.com\/node\/9847\">Linuz Gazette<\/a>; at least now we all know, that pre-teen model is an evil bastard.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bytebot.net\/shots\/tsunami-microsoft.com.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.bytebot.net\/shots\/tsunami-microsoft.com-thumb.png\" alt=\"microsoft.com tsunami relief efforts\" border=\"0\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<small>Microsoft, supposedly helping the tsunami victims in need<\/small><\/center>If anyone&#8217;s interested, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tolong.net\/electriclamb\/\">The Electric Lamb Mission<\/a>, a site setup within 24-hours using Drupal, with folk from Australia, KL, Sumatra, and Singapore all collaborating via e-mail, IM and SMS.
