I got a job and landed in Silicon Valley, and I found out about this venture capital thing. And I was dumbstruck. &#8216;You mean there are people who will give you money to invent new things and start a company? Really? Seriously? It&#8217;s like wow! That&#8217;s really cool!&#8217;\u00a0 And of course we got lucky.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/byte\/85842897\/\" title=\"Caught in the middle by byte, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/43\/85842897_696159051a_n.jpg?resize=320%2C213\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" alt=\"Caught in the middle\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/a>That was 20 years ago. There was a lot less media coverage of VC, deals, angels, etc.<\/p>\n<p>What would be an interesting exercise is to see when VC firms in Asia started? Is it all pushed by the democratization of media?<\/p>\n<p>The fact that today, media is cheaper &#8211; everyone and his uncle has started a publication of some sort. In tech, it seems that most of the media will only cover VC-related stories (i.e. money driven). They&#8217;ve forgotten <em>real\u00a0<\/em>tech.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mavcap.com\/\">MAVCAP<\/a>, the largest VC fund in Malaysia, only started in 2001. A mere 12 years ago!
