I thought life would be better when you could keep your tablets on in flight mode (thus not requiring me to carry physical newspapers on-board or even magazines).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/byte\/121807400\" title=\"F1 airshow by Colin Charles, on Flickr\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/34\/121807400_48af7fea3a_m.jpg?resize=240%2C160&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" alt=\"F1 airshow\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/a>In the USA and in the UK, this is no longer a problem (it hasn\u2019t been at least since the end of last year), I was always hoping that the Asian carriers I tend to fly (Singapore Airlines &amp; Cathay Pacific in particular) would modernise.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I fly to Singapore from KL, and that\u2019s about a 45-minute flight. One day I measured how much time I was wasting without using electronic devices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>26 minutes 45 seconds upon takeoff &#8211; announcement, taxi, takeoff (KUL-SIN)<\/li>\n<li>14 minutes upon landing &#8211; here during taxi, you can use electronic devices\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>41 minutes wasted, is almost as long as the flight ;-)<\/p>\n<p>So it is with great pleasure that since the middle of the year (July 2014), Singapore Airlines <a href=\"http:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/news\/singapore\/transport\/story\/laptops-tablets-allowed-sia-flights-start-end-including-take-and-land\">allows<\/a> you to use your devices (not laptops, but thats ok &#8211; tablets\/phones are good enough for now) in flight-safe mode, and Cathay Pacific just <a href=\"http:\/\/theforwardcabin.boardingarea.com\/2014\/09\/02\/cathay-pacific-extends-use-portable-electronic-devices-onboard-flights\/\">allowed<\/a> this as of mid-September 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Now, when will Malaysia Airlines, and AirAsia wake up?
