{"id":395,"date":"2006-04-26T11:50:06","date_gmt":"2006-04-26T16:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/?p=395"},"modified":"2006-04-27T00:17:00","modified_gmt":"2006-04-27T05:17:00","slug":"qotd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/archives\/2006\/04\/26\/qotd","title":{"rendered":"qotd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard Cory Doctorow about a week ago (yes, we have cool international speakers here in Melbourne all the time!), and if there was only one thing you&#8217;re really meant to take away from his talk, I think I found the gem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/byte\/135645102\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/47\/135645102_3296505d65_m.jpg?resize=240%2C160\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" alt=\"Cory comes to Melbourne!\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong><em>Cory signs a book<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re usually told content is king. He says thats a myth. Have you seen the six trillion dollar industry, that is telecommunications? (okay, I don&#8217;t know if that stat is remotely correct&#8230;) So the content is king idea is bollocks. What is really king is community and inter-personal communication. Getting people to talk about it. Humans are terribly social beings, so yeah, go community.<em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trying to kill MySQL by acquiring open source is like trying to kill<br \/>\na dolphin by drinking the ocean.&#8221;<\/em> &#8212; Marten Mickos<\/p>\n<p>And yes, that quote ties in well with the <a href=\"http:\/\/oraclewatch.eweek.com\/blogs\/oracle\/archive\/2006\/04\/26\/9318.aspx\">Oracle Bought InnoDB Without a Clue<\/a> article&#8230; MySQL has a great community. And of late, we&#8217;re getting a lot more great community contributed content. I do think content is important, but the community is too. And being around over 1,500 MySQL users, all I can say is that there&#8217;s great community here. From financial analysts, to DBAs, to students, to storage engine creators.
