The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skmm.gov.my\/\">Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)<\/a>, ordered all ISPs to block access to a website, thereby violating the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mscmalaysia.my\/topic\/MSC+Malaysia+Bill+of+Guarantees\">MSC Bill of Guarantees<\/a>, which clearly states: <b>Ensure no Internet censorship<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div ALIGN=\"CENTER\">\n<a HREF=\"http:\/\/www.eff.org\/br\/\"><br \/>\n<img SRC=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.eff.org\/br\/br.gif?resize=112%2C76\" ALT=\"Join the Blue Ribbon Online Free Speech Campaign\" HEIGHT=\"76\" WIDTH=\"112\" BORDER=\"1\" ALIGN=\"MIDDLE\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><br \/>\nJoin the Blue Ribbon Online Free Speech Campaign!<\/a>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Malaysiakini <a href=\"http:\/\/malaysiakini.com\/news\/88683\">reports<\/a> (subscription required, so relevant bits pasted here):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><br \/>\nMCMC chief operating officer Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi, when contacted today, confirmed that the block was ordered by the commission, which is the regulatory body for online content.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is being blocked because we found that some of the comments on the website were insensitive, bordering on incitement,&#8221; he told Malaysiakini.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Malaysiakini goes on to add, that this is the first time something like this has been used against non-pornographic websites. Apparently, some also get on 202.188.1.4 and 202.188.0.132. There are a bunch more that you can get, too. <\/p>\n<p>Malaysiakini goes on to report:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><br \/>\nMohamed Sharil said MCMC had instructed all ISPs to block access to Malaysia Today based on complaints received by the general public regarding offensive comments posted on the website. <\/p>\n<p>Asked if the move to block Malaysia Today went against the government\u2019s guarantee of Internet freedom, he said that the matter was subject to interpretation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are governed by the Communications and Multimedia Act (1998) which allows us to take preventive measures and advise our license holders (such as ISPs) when a service user may be contravening national laws,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Under Section 263 of the Act, a licensee must \u201cuse his best endeavour\u201d to prevent his\/her facilities from being used to violate any law in the country&#8221;. <\/p>\n<p>Mohamed Sharil said that MCMC will be communicating with the Malaysia Today owner Raja Petra Kamaruddin and other blog owners soon regarding \u201cethical blogging\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not against blogs, but we would like to see ethical blogging,\u201d he stressed.<\/i>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ethical blogging. Expect yet another blog post on this, soon. In a country where mainstream media is stifled, and used as a propaganda machine, its no wonder people turn to the Internet. If the mainstream media reports &#8220;lies&#8221;, why not the Internet? The people, the <i>rakyat<\/i> are smart enough to distinguish, in this non-communist state of ours.<\/p>\n<p>So, if you need your Malaysia Today fix, the IP address is still valid &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/202.75.62.114\/2008\/\">202.75.62.114<\/a>. Switch to <a href=\"http:\/\/opendns.com\/\">OpenDNS<\/a> (I would suggest switching ISP, but welcome to the monopoly that is Malaysia, right?). You <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/start\">can change<\/a> it on your computer or router, or just use the nameservers if you know how: <b>208.67.222.222<\/b> and <b>208.67.220.220<\/b>. Otherwise, there are ways to change it on Windows (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/start?device=windows-xp\">XP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/start?device=windows-vista\">Vista<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/start?device=windows-2000_windows_NT\">2000<\/a>), Mac OS X (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/start?device=apple-osx-leopard\">Leopard<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/start?device=apple-osx-tiger\">Tiger<\/a>) or even Linux (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opendns.com\/start?device=ubuntu\">Ubuntu<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jbowes.dangerouslyinc.com\/2006\/12\/09\/using-opendns-with-fedora-core-6\/\">Fedora<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>OpenDNS is a workaround. The real problem is the MCMC attempting to censor the Internet. They are attempting to stifle free speech, and the freedom to discuss pertinent issues in an open fashion.
