{"id":1294,"date":"2009-01-30T03:32:52","date_gmt":"2009-01-30T08:32:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/?p=1294"},"modified":"2009-01-30T03:32:52","modified_gmt":"2009-01-30T08:32:52","slug":"mysql-51-a-hot-skill-for-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bytebot.net\/blog\/archives\/2009\/01\/30\/mysql-51-a-hot-skill-for-2009","title":{"rendered":"MySQL 5.1: a hot skill for 2009"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today Giuseppe pointed me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/Articles\/2009\/01\/22\/234369\/hot-skils-mysql-5.1.htm\">Hot skills: MySQL 5.1<\/a>, an article in ComputerWeekly.com.<\/p>\n<p>The takeaway from the Gartner report quoted?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Gartner published a report titled &#8220;The Growing Maturity of Open-Source Database Management Systems&#8221; in November 2008, and found that there was a 50% increase from 2007 to 2008 in the usage of open source DBMS&#8217;s in production.<\/li>\n<li><i>&#8220;Gartner says the major open source DBMSs are now available for installation as packages, without involving the source code, and include tools to help support administrators and managers.&#8221;<\/i> I&#8217;d like to state that, MySQL has always been available in packaged format, and you don&#8217;t need to fudge with the source code if you do not want to. In fact, its available on all your distributions as well.<\/li>\n<li><i>&#8220;Gartner still has reservations: open source DBMSs should be used &#8220;primarily for non-mission-critical applications and those that do not require high availability&#8221;. However, they add, &#8220;If the technical capabilities of the staff are strong, use of an open-source DBMS in mission-critical environments is possible now&#8221;.&#8221;<\/i> I&#8217;d like to affirm that its being used in mission critical environments daily, and no one worries otherwise. <a href=\"http:\/\/mysql.com\/customers\">Customers<\/a> from  <a href=\"http:\/\/mysql.com\/customers\/customer.php?id=75\">Google<\/a> right to Cisco, Nokia, and more, use MySQL, without hiccups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report states that MySQL DBA&#8217;s pull in around \u00a330,000 to \u00a340,000 a year.
