I just got invited to this: MySQL Studio Photos @ Percona Live MySQL. I immediately signed up on the Indiegogo page for MySQL Portrait Photographs. I’m going and I’m happy to see the photographer again.
Julian Cash is an incredibly talented photographer (check out his portfolio) who for some years did some light painting at the MySQL Conference. He also did some wide angle photos. Overall my portrait photo is basically shot by Julian, and I can’t wait to get an additional one. Julian portrays Human Creativity, and he’s also an incredibly nice person. He will bring out the best in you.
If you’re going to be at Percona Live and you’re involved in the MySQL ecosystem in some way, it would be a shame not to get your photo taken by Julian. So support the cause!

This is just for testing purposes, but you might want to play around with MariaDB 5.5.29 coming via the CentOS 6 repositories as mentioned in this post. Please test it out and report bugs if required. The process was simple on a fresh install:
yum update
cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
wget http://dev.centos.org/centos/6/mariadb/mariadb.repo
yum list mariadb\*
yum install mariadb-server mariadb
/etc/init.d/mysqld start
That’s it, it just works. It comes with MEMORY, CSV, MRG_MYISAM, BLACKHOLE, MyISAM, PERFORMANCE_SCHEMA, ARCHIVE, FEDERATED, InnoDB (XtraDB) and Aria.
Remember this replaces mysql-libs, and is set to replace MySQL in your install. Here’s hoping it hits mainline CentOS soon.

February is turning out to be a busy month. I’ll be giving a talk about MariaDB at the SkySQL Solutions Day in Hamburg, alongside Sergei Golubchik. This happens February 1 2013.
I’ll also be in Brussels for FOSDEM and presenting at the MySQL & Friends devroom. Here I will talk about MHA and how you can get automated MySQL failover. I’ll also be hanging out at the CentOS booth with Karanbir Singh giving away MariaDB stickers all weekend. If you’re at FOSDEM, don’t forget to sign up for the MySQL Community Dinner on Saturday night! Naturally, Friday’s beer activity is something I’ll be at too.

I think it’s worth noting that since January 2012 there was no changes to MHA (0.53). Yoshinori Matsunobu made two releases in December (release notes), one in time for my Percona Live London 2012 talk. Thanks Yoshi! Totally download MHA 0.55 which is still be actively developed & used in production at multiple locations.

I think MariaDB has had a great few weeks recently and the timeline of these events are important.
- 27 November 2012 – WiredTree Adds MariaDB for Faster MySQL Database Performance (well worth reading their motivations to switch)
- 29 November 2012 – Monty Program & SkySQL release the MariaDB Client Library for C & Java
- 4 December 2012 – MariaDB Foundation is announced, see ZDNet coverage.
- mid-December 2012 – Wikimedia Foundation starts migrating Wikipedia to MariaDB, not for any other reason besides the fact that the Foundation was announced (more ZDNet coverage).
Now, there have been rumors that the client libraries are just rip-offs or relicensed. They are not. They’ve been in works for customers for several years now (yes, Monty Program does need to pay the bills), and there are many a feature difference. This will be addressed next week to ensure that people know what they’re getting.
There have also been rumors that the foundation was announced with regards to the connectors. Wrong again. Connectors were announced first, foundation came later (see timeline above). You don’t do these things in a span of one week, the talk for the foundation has been going on for months. I should know, as alongside Monty & Rasmus, I’ve been somewhat involved.
I agree that we need better communications (remember to like us on facebook, follow us on twitter @mariadb), and we’re working on it. Its also that time of year when people love to take vacations (I am one of them). All that said, watch http://blog.mariadb.org/ closely as that’s the official channel for all things MariaDB.
2012 has been a great year for MariaDB in general, as the project grows, we get more coverage (see news reports), unparalleled downloads thanks to our 5.5-series being released, and our expanding product lines. I can forsee 2013 being even more exciting. Thank you all for an amazing 2012.
