Well, spent some time getting the Malay version of ms.openoffice.org up and running – took more effort than I had imagined. Also got the Red Hat/Fedora SIG website sorted.
Downloaded kernel 2.6.5, got it working on the iBook, yay! I tried to mount a cifs styled filesystem, it crashed and brought me to the debugger. No fun, I’ll be bugzilla’ing it as soon as I get the spanking new feature of writing kernel messages across a network working. After a recompile trying to get the USB thumb drive working, the screen started to get wacky – I’ve given up for the day to get some more real things done…

Something I do in my free time, but nowadays seems to eat up into my entire life. Spent a good part of the day yesterday on phone conversations to make sure things are going the way it should be. My job mainly is to train the trainers now, and thats it – line has to be drawn as to what can be achieved. Punting the idea of an open source support network, it requires funding, and might not exactly make money (initially).
Cynthia must be out to get us in her next article For PC project to work. OpenOffice.org has yet to achieve mass market appeal because RM5 copies of Microsoft Office XP are available – government, do your job and curb piracy. Who is this Seow character, getting off saying “the Linux bundle will appeal to the techie type or those who already own a legal copy of an operating system and want to replace older hardware.” Remember, we are giving away PC Gemilang in Malay too (at least my specs state that).
Really doesn’t help when Microsoft has set up a website stating their claims, and also painting FUD about the Linux package. This is unfair competition in all aspects, and I’m sure we’re going to pressure them to change it. Uncertain vendor support (Fedora) they mention, maybe someone reading this has the power to apply a change to that statement…

The past few days have been most active with lots of new things in the Linux world. Some thoughts on usability, and a fairly nice response based on GNOME 2.6.
Corel’s WordPerfect is going to be available on Linux again (back then, I preferred it to StarOffice 5.1); this implies we need to get the wp filter working soon. Also available is IndeView – burn it on a CD, with your OOo presentation and you have an instant viewer! This is our first OOo viewer of sorts, and if we use this to our advantage, a light-weight Writer/Calc viewer might come soon too.
Based on the successful Red Hat Meetup we had, I’ve gotten Jason to make us a special SIG at the Linux Users of Victoria! I present the Red Hat LUV SIG for Red Hat and Fedora discussions; we’ll meet once a month, have a list set up soon enough, and be a nice community together now :) Wonder if this is the first SIG that’s been started up based on the RH Meetup?

Yay, Fedora News Updates #9 has been released. In this issue I cover the release of Fedora Core 2 test2, talk a bit about the X.org replacement of XFree86, have some Yum tips, look into SELinux again, and much more. And no, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke.

Went to the Red Hat Meetup day today at Gloria Jeans. Nice, Russell Coker, Anshul Gupta, and two other Korean folk joined us (sorry, forgotten the names!). Mike was supposed to show, but it was a no go. Had coffee, chatted about usual things, mainly SE Linux and how we can secure Linux a wee bit more. Whined about Malaysia’s RH scene, found out RH Korea makes most of its money from training, and might want to do this regularly. (photos)
Before that, it was an Apple talk. Pure marketing stuff, I wish it was more technical oriented when he talked about HPC. Some nibbles and a Coke I had. Trains were delayed today, driver shortage.
- FC2 test2 on the Digital Celebris (dobby) installed fine in text mode – 64MB RAM, Pentium Pro 180, Matrox Millenium VGA, NIC all working. SELinux is in enforcing mode (Active), only noticed hang is that after installation, when I get to the reboot screen, it just hung. #118992 is where this lives.
- If the FC2 test2 CDs don’t boot for you, Smart Boot Manager is what you want. Running it will write itself to a nice floppy, and your boot choices will be aplenty. Seems to be a problem on the lists I’ve noticed.
