A quick update on a few keynotes that the O’Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo 2011 managed to recently close:
- The opening keynote, The State of the Dolphin, given by none other than Tomas Ulin, who is currently the VP of the MySQL Engineering team at Oracle. I am told that this is not just a “what’s new” and “what’s coming up”, as there will also be a Q&A session with an analyst, customer, and Tomas. You must not miss this on Tuesday morning at 9am, 12th April 2011.
- On Thursday at 9.30am, we have The Next Decade in Data Management, a keynote given by Mike Olson, CEO of Cloudera. More and more I see people using Hadoop/Hbase alongside their MySQL installs, so I think this talk is a must-see.
Early bird registration ends March 15 2011. What are you waiting for? Procrastination will cost you!
Don’t forget to follow the conference via social media: Facebook, Twitter.

I’m headed to Lisbon, Portugal for the week of March 7-15. Were have a MariaDB Developer Meeting there, hosted by Monty Program. We’re still getting people stating that they are coming (which is good), so if you’re local to the area, and dig MySQL/MariaDB/databases/opensource, drop by and say hi (March 11-13 is when the meeting happens at the Holiday Inn Lisbon).
I’m stoked since I’ve never been to Lisbon, so I’m going a few days earlier to check the place out. If you’ve been before, I’d appreciate tips on what to see, what to do, what I must not miss, etc. I think I’ll actually bring my camera this time around too!

Its that time of year again. The O’Reilly MySQL Conference & Expo 2011 happening April 11-14 2011, in Santa Clara, California. As co-chair this year with Brian Aker, I’m pretty excited at the content available. It is certainly more diverse and if you thought you knew everything about MySQL, remember you also want to learn about the ecosystem surrounding it.
No one just deploys MySQL standalone these days. There’s an ecosystem. Heck, even in the MySQL world, there is an ecosystem building out. Look at the schedule grid, and see how diverse things are. Yes, there are talks on CouchDB, PostgreSQL, Cassandra, Eucalyptus, OpenStack, “NoSQL” and more.
Looking at the theme, the ecosystem and beyond, it will give attendees a pretty good idea on how to create a good reference architecture; their own reference architecture. Learn from all the talks, and the experiences of the people in the trenches.
So what are you waiting for? Register already! Best price registration ends soon (26/01), so don’t wait — save some cash for the drink-fuelled night chats at all the birds-of-a-feather sessions that spillover to the bar ;-)

MariaDB,
MySQL.
I’ll be going to foss.in this year, and am totally excited (the last time I spoke there was in 2007 – Paying it Forward: Harnessing the MySQL Contributory Resources – where I talked about moving from BitKeeper to Bazaar, using Launchpad, the MySQL Forge, and more). This time around, I will be giving a talk titled: MariaDB: The new M in LAMP. I feel a little nostalgia, because the MySQL ecosystem has evolved a lot since December 2007.
The database crew is going to be strong there, as we also have Gary Pendergast, my friend from MySQL (now Oracle) giving a talk titled: Tuning MySQL for Performance, Stability and Fail Safety.
We figured we’d have some kind of meetup, either over chai or if we can find space to have a little database BoF. If you have any questions, queries, etc. about MariaDB or MySQL, don’t hesitate to find either one of us. If you would like to meetup, shoot me an email: colin[at]montyprogram[dot]com.
foss.in is happening December 15-17 2010 in Bangalore, India. Register now, if you haven’t already. See you there next week!
P/S: I will be there with some Salmiakkikossu to keep the tradition alive!

MariaDB,
MySQL.
I will be in Manila, Philippines from September 13 – 17 2010. If you want to learn more about MariaDB, talk about MySQL, or just talk about open source in general, there are several opportunities for this:
- Y4iT 2010 (event is September 14-17): Thursday, September 16 2010, 1.50pm, the talk I will give is titled: MariaDB: The new M in LAMP. It was a popular attention grabber during OSCON, where we had a MariaDB booth, and this is a completely new talk, so should be fun to give in front of a huge audience.
- MySQL/MariaDB Meetup on September 16 2010, 4-6pm, at Bahay ng Alumni. This is a meetup, and will be informal, so good for Q&A. Manila doesn’t have a regular MySQL Meetup group, and we’re hoping to kick something off here. Much thanks to Rom Feria, who helped putting everyone together to have this organised!
- DevCon at Y4iT, September 15 2010, 4.30-7.30pm, there will be a lightning talk on MariaDB. These talks are not 5 minutes long, but 10 minutes.
If you’d like to meetup anytime during the week, don’t hesitate to drop me a message via email (colin[at]montyprogram[dot]com) or @reply me on Twitter – I’m @bytebot. I will have my mobile with me, so don’t hesitate to drop me an SMS if required.

MariaDB,
MySQL.
MariaDB just released MariaDB 5.1.50. Linux, Solaris and Windows (32-bit) are supported. Go give it a twirl.
Its also worth noting that today when you go install Drupal, and check out the documentation for requirements, you’ll see that MariaDB is now a recommended option.
Via the new news page at Monty Program’s newly designed website, I also found out that MariaDB is now recommended in the documentation for the next release of the Zend Framework. See the changelog.
